Central African Republic (CAR)
Why would anyone want to visit an unstable phantom state in the middle of Africa?
Whilst much is essentially inaccessible, a few remarkable wildlife areas can be visited by intrepid travellers. The Dzanga-Sangha region is World Heritage Site covering immense tropical rainforest. The Sangha River, rich birdlife, gorillas, other primates and forest-dwelling antelope make for a rewarding visit. The highlight is surely Dzanga Bai, a forest clearing where elephants gather in large numbers. Other creatures like Giant Forest Hog, Bongo and Sitatunga may also be seen. Surprisingly decent accommodation options are available, great after a day out in the forest with the Ba’Aka people.
Chinko is another vast conservation area with both forest and savanna to explore. Lion and chimpanzee inhabit the same space! Under the passionate management of African Parks, this is an off-piste adventure!
