Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)
A massive country. Perhaps too big. It is home to a wealth of biodiversity within the Congo rainforest and river. The large parks in the centre are an exploration by many days of plane and boat to reach. So, a visit is focused on the eastern side along the Albertine Rift valley. This is a land of wonder and much turmoil. Complicated war, lack of government control and epidemics like Ebola mean that currently intrepid trips are not recommended. But,
The moment circumstances change, it is top of the list. It is spectacularly beautiful with resilient and friendly people. Forests, dormant and active volcanoes, savanna, lakes and wildlife are still thriving in parts. Trekking to see the Mountain and Grauer’s Gorillas is still one of the most uplifting and humbling life experiences, a real must do for anyone who is able. The forests are alive with endemic birds and other primates too. After an intense hike, a night spent on the rim of the active Nyiragongo volcano is other-worldly. Even the cities are fun and interesting as is a ferry rides down mysterious Lake Kivu. We are all praying for the DRC to return to some semblance of normal.
