Ethiopia
The long and rich history of Ethiopia needs time to absorb. It’s a land of great contrasts. From the blistering Danakil Desert below sea level to the chilly mountain tops of Bale and Simien. From ancient rural landscapes to high-paced modern city life in Addis Ababa. From Sudan to Somalia and from Kenya to Eritrea, Ethiopia is the centre of the ‘Horn of Africa’.
Ethiopia has many endemic species making it very attractive for naturalists to visit. Herds of the bleeding heart baboon, sleek Ethiopian Wolves and Walia Ibex are some of the incredible highlights. The great cultural sites on Lake Tana, the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, walled city of Harar and obelisks at Aksum will amaze you. The National Museum brings much of the great history to life from the famous skeleton of Lucy to modern day Emperors. In many of these historic sites, unique birdlife can easily be seen as you move around. Along the many lakes in the Great Rift Valley exceptional birding opportunities can be enjoyed and add an extra dimension to travels here.
