Republic of Congo
The Republic of Congo is a safe and fantastic country to visit. It bears no connection to the eastern DR Congo which is 1,000’s of miles away! A short stay in Brazzaville on the Congo River is a fine start to tap into the culture and enjoy the impressive river. The prime reason to visit is for exploring the incredible Odzala National Park. This park is a safe haven for a wide range of forest and savanna edge species. So, if you are keen to discover what the Congo is all about, this is the best place to be!
It is a full immersion with a luxury edge that makes this so special. Wading through forest clearings, kayaking and boating the rivers and game drives in the grasslands are part of the experience. Forest Elephants, Forest Buffalo, Spotted Hyena and myriad of forest birds species are sure to be found. The highlight for most may well be the Western Lowland Gorillas. These can be viewed on guided trails in intimate encounters as well as from elevated viewing platforms where you remain hidden from view. A week in this park will be a revelation. It also connects with further adventure in the Central African Republic (make live link to my CAR write-up?). A new exciting destination is the Conkouati-Douali National Park on the coast. Many rare species, some similar to Odzala occur here, just in mangroves and on the beach! Both parks are run as collaborations between the Congolese government and the conservation agencies African Parks and Noe respectively.
