South Sudan
One of the grandest mammal migrations survives in one of the most volatile nations on earth.
On the floodplains east of the mighty River Nile, is an enormous open landscape that reaches the border of Ethiopia. Within the more than 40,000 square mile Boma-Badingilo Migratory Landscape lies 2 parks, many indigenous communities and over five million migrating antelope! Kob antelope, Mongalla Gazelle, Tiang antelope and Bohor Reedbuck are the 4 migratory species. Predator numbers appear low, but all three big cats, wild dog and hyena are present. African Parks is mandated to manage the area, doing research, protection, engaging the cattle-herding peoples and developing a plan for some limited tourism. Currently the only viable exploration is by helicopter, staying the basic but wonderful Maruwa Tented Camp.
