Zambia
Zambia remains the ‘wild place’ that you may only visit on future safaris. There is no reason not to start in Zambia if you crave getting into the wild! There is an excellent network of large national parks covering a variety of habitats, all with exciting and memorable wildlife. Walking and sleeping out in the wild are very much a part of the Zambian safari experience.
In the west is the remote Liuwa Plain where Africa’s second largest wildebeest migration occurs. Few tourists, very good accommodation and wide open plains. Community engagement, returning lions and hyena and seasonal flooding make for a very different safari here. The Zambezi River plays host to its own set of spectacles from wild dogs and elephants to the king of the waters in the Tigerfish! The more remote places like Bangweulu, Kasanka and Mutinondo provide excellent variety to the usual safaris. This is especially true if you enjoy birds and bats! The Kafue, North & South Luangwa parks are the cornerstone of the safaris. The more remote North is the place for wild walking safaris with few visitors. The south provides a myriad of accommodation options in one of the most wildlife-rich regions in Africa. The pulse of the Luangwa River sets the tone for a massive hippo population, many elephants and big cats which hunt the rich floodplains. Kafue is one of the largest parks in Africa and will reward time spent in this wilderness. In short, Zambia is the complete package for the adventurous traveller.
